There was an article on Lifehacker about "How Do You Make Your Personal or Professional Landing Page Stand Out?", see it here, which asked readers to share their personal pages. So I shared my website with a screenshot and explanation.

Since I'm freelancing I needed a personal website, with my own domain and professional look, that reflected my work and image.

I'm a K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) kind of guy, so I wanted a in your face homepage, where I introduce myself and give the opportunity to show off my work without leaving the main page or navigate trough menus.

Later they published another article "How To Make Your Personal or Professional Landing Page Stand Out" where they chose the best examples, in which my site is included. Click on the image below to read the original article.

In two days I had more traffic than the twelve months that the site is online.

Sick!

Two weeks have passed since my last post. I haven't abandoned the blog, but my family has been sick with the flu, and I've been the last victim, disabling me from updating the blog.

So, here I am back with the latest news about myself!

I am a self proclaimed and proud Geek!
My venture on this world started as a child with Superheroes comic books. I was so fascinated by the drawings and stories, that I would spent hours, which have became years, drawing my favorite characters.

As any young kid I watched a lot of cartoons, but one in particular sucked me into the world of Anime, "Future Boy Conan". I watched it in the original version with portuguese subtitles, and at that time i didn't know how to read and still was fascinated by it!

In 1984 I won my first computer, the ZX Spectrum, and a computer nerd was born!
In the following years, to this day I've discovered new pleasures and fed the old.

I try to put some of this culture in my work, to show a bit of who I am and where I came from!

Pirates

My first contact with pirates was the disney movie, Treasure Island, and since then I'm hooked!

Pirates where adventurers that sailed the seas pillaging fiercely everything in their path, put their enemies walk the plank, speak and dress funny, had bad teeth, eye patches, earrings...
in short they were badass cool!

Jack Sparrow is the pirate of the moment, but my favorite of all time is Guybrush Threepwood, the mightiest pirate of them all! When the first Monkey Island was released in 1990 I was so absorbed by that world that 20 years later here I am writing about it! Like the comic books Superheroes, pirates are iconic characters with strange outfits, and despite only having the former as a reference, they always fascinated me!

My Pirate Gallery appears because, I have a friend who also likes Pirates (though his references are only from movies), wanted a pretty and cute Jolly Roger more suited for children for his daughters.

From that design I adapted it for a boy and made a few more realistic for the parents, for the truly Pirate Family!

Propaganda

I was born in Portugal, May 1974, two weeks after the Carnation Revolution, a military coup that overthrew a dictatorship and initiated a democratic regime.

In the following years, during my childhood, I was fascinated by the propaganda murals that graced the city of Lisbon, the themes were always the same, justice, the people and the clear superiority of the party, whatever it was!

When I started my gallery of propaganda, despite the theme, I wanted to distance myself from politics and used the Star Wars universe as reference.

Due to copyright of Star Wars, and not being able to use the images in my shop, I got inspiration from the concept of George Orwell's "Big Brother" and created images of abstract corrupt totalitarian regimes, so that the images could be used by anyone who identifies with the messages.

Wolverine

The Superheroes Comics were always a source of inspiration, and when I found out they were in production of a movie about Wolverine in Japan, I remembered the books by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, and decided to make my tribute to one of my favorite characters.

In case you're wondering, wolverine's first appearance was in "The Incredible Hulk #180", he is so badass he thought he could beat the Hulk!

I've recorded the whole process and I'm sharing it here in the form of a tutorial. It's thirteen hours condensed into one with onscreen instructions with chill out music.

My Chibis, My Lil' Devilles

Since the birth of my kids I started to draw cute little characters for them. Over time these designs evolved into chibis, and were eventually baptized to "Lil' Devilles."

Chibi is a cute little Japanese character with a large head, wikipedia explains it better here!

The "Lil 'Devilles" name was born from my own surname, Capdeville. I'm Portuguese, born and raised, but having a french name, has always been cause of confusion, both spoken and written. This situation lead some people to shorten the name to "Cap", "Deville" or "Devil".

So, my little devils became my "Lil' Devilles". Now let me introduce them individually.

Meet Deville, my white and bald androgynous guinea pig. He will be subject of all my experiments, and try all kinds of costumes, clothing and wigs. He's a brave little fella!

Meet Art, inspired in my son Arthur, loves all kinds of video games and sports.

Meet Maggie, inspired in my daughter Margarida, has the face of an angel and the behavior of an ogre. She is a very pompous and feminine Princess Ballerina.

In the future I will increase the characters family and tell their stories. In the meantime check them out in my store.

Hi! My name is Paulo Capdeville, welcome to my journal of awesomeness!

I'm a freelance Graphic Designer and Illustrator based in Almada, Portugal.

A tiny little country situated in southwestern Europe, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and right next to Spain.

I Was born in 1974 and started drawing since then. The influences for my designs began with the cartoons on tv and comic books. Throughout the years while i acquired new interests, Arts and Computers have always stayed on top of preferences, and now its impossible to separate the two.

The Blog will be to share my work, the creative process and products I upload to my Zazzle Store. The topic will always be Art in is many forms, but giving more emphasis to Ilustration and Graphic Design.
